Visitor How to Install Wikipedia on Your iPod

I have an old 20GB iPod and even though I have a lot of music on there, I am only taking up half of the space available. So there’s another 10GB kicking around doing nothing and so I decided to start putting some useful iPod tools on there for when I’m on the move. Some of that space was allocated for installing one of my favourite websites - Wikipedia.
Yes that’s right. You can now have the entire Wikipedia encylopedia on your iPod. Clocking in at only 1.7 GB of space, it is a very handy tool if you have the sudden uncontrollable urge while out at the shops to discover the capital of Mongolia or the mating habits of eels. The Wikipedia file is updated approximately once every 6 months so you won’t have the most up-to-date version but hey it’s free and Mongolia isn’t going to change their capital anytime soon.
It’s very easy to set this up but the actual Wikipedia file is so huge that it takes a long time to download. I have been waiting for 35 minutes and the download is only at 40%. So be prepared to wait a while for the file to be finished.
1. First connect your iPod to your computer and fire up iTunes. Then make sure the box “enabling disk use” is ticked. This is extremely important otherwise you won’t be able to move any files on there. Then close down iTunes.
2. Download the program installation wizard and install. Make sure your iPod is still plugged into your computer as the program installation wizard will automatically detect your iPod presence and install everything directly there.
3. One important thing to remember during installation is that you will be asked if you want to make the Wikipedia your “default system” on your iPod. This means that when you switch on your iPod each time, do you want to see your music menu or the Wikipedia menu? I recommend you say no to making Wikipedia the default view.
4. When the installation is complete, eject your iPod from your computer.
5. Now is the time to see if the installation worked. You need to reboot your iPod which you achieve by holding down the play button and the menu button together at the same time for 5 seconds. You will then see the Apple logo which is the iPod re-booting. When you see the Apple logo, press down the re-wind button for 5 seconds and this kicks in the new Wikipedia section of your iPod.
6. If everything looks OK, you now need to download the huge 1.7 GB Wikipedia file. When it is downloaded, go to your iPod folder on your PC, specifically to “data\encyclopodia\library\” and place the file in there.
7. Again, eject and re-boot the iPod, use the rewind button to go to your Wikipedia section and see if the Wikipedia file works properly.
How to Install Wikipedia on Your iPod
To make a search, just use the scroll wheel to choose letters to spell your search term (just like you would choose the keys on a mobile phone to type a SMS message). Then press the “play” button to start searching.
A few extra pointers:
*When accessing the Wikipedia file on your iPod, you have to go into “settings” first and alter the screen contrast and the wheel sensitivity. It will be totally off-whack the first time you access it.
*The older your iPod, the slower it will be to retrieve information from the Wikipedia file. Your iPod might even crash, prompting you to re-boot. So this works best with the newer iPod models.
*Every 6 months or so, download the Wikipedia file again so you get the latest version. However, saying that, the current file is dated February 2007 so maybe once a year is more accurate!
*When you are in the Wikipedia section, pressing the menu button turns the back light on. The back light will stay on until you switch it off again so you can read the text easily. Be aware though that having the light continually on is a real battery drainer.
*To get back to your music section, you need to reboot the iPod again by holding down the menu button and the play button.

The BlackBerry Mistake

Ten years back Blackberry was revolutionary. There were several features in the Blackberry that made it unique, for instance… It was an early entrant into the PDA phones category. Before that, you had cell phones (e.g. Motorola) and then you had PDAs (Palm). The space in between was ripe for conquering – and conquer Blackberry did. It made mobile computing easy. The ecosystem around Blackberry is closed and propriety  and as evil as that sounds, it’s actually a blessing for a vast majority of the users. The two greatest mobile makers in the world (RIM and Apple) have a stranglehold over their platforms, and they still continue to outsell everyone else. Blackberry obvious discovered very early on in the game that it had to make the use experience easy – no funky widgets, no unstable apps, no bells and whistles. And to do this it had to obsessive control the platform. It made mobile data secure. Its probably the only device that the president of the US would be allowed to use. RIM has always had a razor focus on the people they want to target: business users who travel and need to keep on top of their use email. BB is designed from the ground up to be secure – hence the close control over every aspect of the platform, including the telco part. It pushed email You have to understand that back in the day this was revolutionary. The fact that you could get emails as soon as someone on the other end pressed Send just played into the growing hyper-connectivity addiction. You might argue that you can do the same on your Windows Mobile by setting the mail client to check for email every 2 minutes. Yes, but it would require tweaking and cost data every time it connected. Blackberry was an elegant solution that just worked. So there you have it, a brief run-down of what made Blackberry great. So basically, if you’re coming from mid 90s to early 2000s, and you discover the Blackberry, you will be dazzled, the clouds will part, the mountains will sing, and in divine unison everyone would seem to say…”BLACKBERRY”….but that was 10 years back. If you go to the Blackberry after 2 years of living, loving and hating the iPhone, then at the best of time your reaction will be “Meh”. And the fact that Blackberry is increasingly trying to position itself as a consumer device is ironically making matters worse. But all is not lost, after using a flashy platform like iPhone, there are certain some aspects of BB that appealed to me: It’s Snappy: That’s the first thing you notice when you start playing with it. Try opening a calendar or contacts or another app on iPhone and then compare the loading time with Blackberry. BB gives instant a whole new meaning.Keyboard: I loved the keyboard on my BB. After 2 years of a soft iPhone keyboard, actually feeling the click of a button gave me this deep happy feeling that I only otherwise get when I eat organic cereal. There’s something real, healthy and satisfying about it. More practically though, while my typing speed is still probably quicker on a soft keyboard, what I still about physical buttons is that its easy to dial numbers and look for contacts…just start typing and viola.….struggling to think of another bullet. But the real reason people continue to use BB is non of the above; its legacy. In most cases it works with corporate email systems, and is unanimously approved by all major corporate and government CIOs. That’s a difficult feat to match for touchy, feely mobile media devices like iPhone and N1, at least for the time being. So essentially vast swathes of the user base is essentially blackmailed into using BB. In almost every aspect of usability, Blackberry lags behind iPhone and Android. The trackball or the optical track-pad is just no match for capacitive touch, or pinch-and-zoom. Internet browsing is generally a pain on BB; you can’t double tap to the section you want to read. Adding a number to an existing contact requires like 4 deliberate steps, not 2 simple taps. BB doesn’t maintain SMS conversations in one place, as each message you receive and send shows separately. You have to scroll down to the received message, click R for reply and only then can you SMS back. I could go on and on and on with usability pains on the Blackberry, but it has been written before. To put it in the words of Infoworld “the BlackBerry has become the Lotus Notes of the mobile world: It’s way past its prime.”

4 Things You Probably Never Knew Your Mobile Phone Could Do...

4 Things You Probably Never Knew Your Mobile Phone Could Do...

FIRST
Emergency
Now you can see what's hidden

The
Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile
is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile; network
and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing
network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this
number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.

SECOND

Have you locked your keys in the car?

Now you can see what's hiddenDoes your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in
handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone:
If you lock your keys in the car and the
spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their mobile phone from your
cell phone.
Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have
the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile
phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to
drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be
hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other 'remote'
for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked
our car over a mobile phone!'

THIRD
Battery Power

Now you can see what's hiddenImagine your mobile battery is very low. To activate, press
the keys *3370# Your mobile will restart with this reserve and the instrument
will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you
charge your mobile next time.

(Note: This may not work on alll cell phones)

FOURTH

How to disable a STOLENmobile phone?

Now you can see what's hiddenTo check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following
digits on your phone * # 0 6 #

A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is
unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your
phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code.
They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the
SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone
back,but at least you
know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this,
there would be no point in peoplestealing
mobile phones.

Change Your Windows Drive Icons For Free

If you've always wanted to change any Windows drive icon (C, D, E, etc. drives) to the one that you want, here are two ways to do it. The first, the simplest way, is by adding it by the autorun.inf method. The second is a lot harder - through the registry method.

A great place for loyalty free icons is deviantart.com where users themselves create the icons to display and share with others. When downloading icons, you can also comment on the work if you like it.

To locate icons quickly, all that you need to do is search for the word icons on Deviant Art. A few of the loveliest high quality icons that you can find on Deviant Art, influens icons, eico, translucent HD drives icons, Dozi Extreme icons and HydroPRO v2.

You may need to convert PNG files to ICO icon format. There are two ways to do this, either use the free download MyPng2ico or use the free website Convertico.

The Simple Way

The simple way is to add autorun.inf files into the root of the drive. This of course will not work for optical drives such as DVD-ROM drives, since CD/DVD media will need to contain such a file to make it work. Next time you pop in a CHIP or DIGIT DVD, have a look, an autorun.inf file is specifying an icon.

In order to do this...

1. Open Notepad and copy paste this text below

[autorun]
icon=download.ico

download.ico is only an example, replace that with whatever is the name of the actual icon that you are placing, but don't forget to add the extension .ico at the end.

2. Now save the text file with the name autorun.inf, choose Save As Type as All Files. If you don't do this you'll get autorun.inf.txt, which is incorrect and the tweak will not work.

3. Place the autorun.inf file as well as the icon in the root of the directory, meaning if I'm modifying F drive, I should just place both files there and not in a separate folder.

4. Now hit F5 on the keyboard when in My Computer and voila, your icon should appear.

Note that you can use this special method for USB drives too!

Philips GoGear ViBE

(Rs. 3,990)

We recently got our hands on the little Philips GoGear ViBE player and were very impressed by its performance. The unassuming little player packs in features such as video and photo playback along with a music player, FM radio and voice recorder. The audio quality is superb and the player has a nice zippy UI that is easy to use as well. A very good audio player for the price.

Of late MP3 players have been overshadowed by mobile phones due to their ability to deliver nearly the same level of performance, and sometimes even better. However, there are people who believe that the task of playback should be left to the specialists. It is for this reason that MP3 players continue to sell, and the ones like the iPod nano and touch are selling like never before. It is for these people that we have compiled this little guide here that lists the best MP3 players that you can buy today. We've tried to cover a wide budget range so that there is a player that will suit every budget. We hope this guide will be useful for those planning to buy an MP3 player this festive season.

Sandisk Sansa Clip
(Rs. 2,200 - 3,247)

Small yet functional, the Sandisk Sansa Clip has all the features that you would want in a music player, including a display that's missing on quite a few of its competitors. The Clip, true to its name, also has a convenient clip on its back that lets you attach the tiny player to your clothes or a belt. the audio performance is good and the Clip also comes with many features and diferent capacities, from 1 GB to 8 GB.
